Hussein Chalayan Exhibition

A definite date for the diary this September is a solo exhibition from British designer Hussein Chalayan at the Lisson Gallery (Sept 08-Oct 02, 2010). A truly inspiring designer in a sea of typical catwalk looks; Chalayan pushes boundaries and his avant garde pieces could never be seen as clothes for the sake of clothes, they are always vehicles for his challenging and interesting concepts. An exhibition at an art gallery is perfect for Chalayan whose catwalk shows are often more reminiscent of art installations.

They combine incredible artistic concepts with amazing technological ideas and result in one-of-a-kind pieces that would be much more at home in an exhibition space than ever on the high street. Highlights from the designer’s prolific career include the wooden skirt which transforms into a coffee table from his A/W 2000 collection.

Also his spring 2007 bubble dress comprised of lots of plastic bubbles roughly resembling a mini-dress recently copied by Lady GaGa on her Fame Ball tour.

We can’t wait to see what the designer has up his sleeve for this gallery show.

Trend Fix: Dressing-up Box

For all those of you, who are already tiring of the flimsy nature of summer dressing and yearning for something with a bit more substance, look no further than the latest collection from innovative duo, Meadham Kirchoff for A/W10. An eye-watering amalgamation of sequins, glitter, costume jewellery, crowns and veils this dressing-up box approach to outfit building is truly creative and inspiring and set to be an under-the-radar-trend for next season. Focusing on layering, bright colour, and heavy embellishment and accessorising to the max, the collection is the perfect antidote to this season’s simplicity and pared down silhouettes. The collection is based on a “documentary tracing Romany culture and its links from India through to Spain”. Become a magpie and use your own travels this summer as your starting point, your body as your canvas, and your imagination as your stylist and create your own truly original dressing-up box style come autumn.

Sell Me Candy

Louis Vuitton has just opened its brand new emporium on Bond Street and, as it seems Victoria Beckham and Rhianna both have, we will be running straight to the hand bag section; for there resides this season’s most delightful array of mouth-watering arm candy.

Candy could just be the theme behind the pastel confections that Marc Jacobs sent down the runway for S/S 10, stealing the attention away from the clothes. In his own words the collection was “about travelers—the movement that came after punk. Then we were thinking about hiking, trekking, and then denim and parkas—city utilitarianism” and this eclectic mix was nowhere better summarized than in the accessories. Sugary sweet shades on soft leather are fashioned into practical duffle bags and messengers all embossed with the brands infamous monogram. Once embellished with toggles, tassels and even tails as the fur dangling from the ‘Sunrise’ bag illustrates, these beauties become less functional more fantastical!

Perfect Timing, Perfect Vision

The timing on the release of these new beauties couldn’t have been any better. Just as the weather warms up and the sun makes a guest appearance in our lives, Eyewear label, Retrospecs release their new Black Eyewear range. First introduced in 2006, the quirky shades are cleverly named after jazz musicians such as; ‘Chet Baker’ and ‘John Coltrane’.

Black Eyewear has been used in the James bond film, Quantum of solace and been worn by the likes of Johnny Depp and Lily Allen. The collection boasts more than 100 styles (which makes it a lot harder to choose!)

So their Cultural and Johnny Depp loves ‘em… There couldn’t have been two better reasons to buy!
