Last night saw the annual costume institute gala (aka the Oscars of the East coast), hosted by none other than her majesty, Anna Wintour, who chose to sparkle in silver Chanel Haute Couture and Oprah Winfrey, who arrived with Oscar de la Renta in a dark jewel-tone commissioned design of his. As usual, almost every celebrity, designer, socialite, model and socialite turned up for the event, which played to the theme American Women: Fashioning a National Identity.
The two most powerful women in the world
Nudes mostly dominated the red carpet as stars such as Stella McCartney who arrived with girlfriends Liv Tyler and Kate Hudson (all in Stella), Emma Watson (Burberry, of course) and the Ralph Lauren dressed Jessica Biel opted for more demure, simple dresses with neutral tones and minimal detail.
However the trend was dismissed by the ever experimental Katy Perry, who turned up in a dress fitted with LED lights, and M.I.A who looked the like the street girl she is in Alexander Wang for GAP.
As for the designers who had their PR work overtime, Marc Jacobs, who dressed 8 guests, and GAP, the official sponsor of the event, manage to win the title of king and queen, however much to the liking of the Costume Institute a surprising number of guests chose to wear American designers such as Ralph Lauren, Oscar De La Renta, Calvin Klein and Vera Wang.
