Yesterday morning – Fashion site JC report tweeted “Exclusive – it’s official Giles Deacon is in at Ungaro” – and it seems they are right – The central St Martins graduate is set to take over as Creative Director of iconic Parisian fashion house Ungaro.
Ungaro has had a rocky few years – Esteban Cortazar lasted three seasons at the French label, previous to that Vincent Darré and Peter Dundas lasting just two seasons each and do we dare even mention the disastrous appointment of Lindsay Lohan as artistic advisor in 2009? Giles – has seen great triumphs within his career – working for Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Bottega Veneta after his graduation, before being handpicked by Tom Ford to work on Gucci womenswear. Going on to launch his own label ‘Giles’ in 2003 which resulted in winning fashion designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards 2004, and then again in 2006. He was also awarded the prestigious French ANDAM Fashion Award’s Grand Prix last year. One of the few designers who appears able to turn their hand to almost anything, Giles gained great success with the line of handbags he designed for mulberry, and his long running collaboration with New Look on “Giles Gold” is widely considered one of the few genuinely successful designer and high street collaborations of recent years.
We hope this new position at Ungaro will be greatly beneficial to both Giles and the iconic fashion house, and its safe to say we cannot wait to see what beautiful clothes are produced from this collaboration.
