One of the must-see exhibitions of the year is residing at the National Portrait Gallery. It is that of the late prolific & influential fashion photographer, Irving Penn (1917-2009).
He pioneered simple portraiture as a fashion photographer, embarking on his career with Vogue in the 1940s. Many of today’s leading photographers such as Mario Testino and Rankin to name but a few, all cite Penn as a strong influence, and he is often described as “a great practitioner of the camera”.
His archive of celebrity portraits, fashion photographs, still life and images of remote places, are not to be missed, and if many strike you as familiar, don’t be surprised, as such is his influence, that his work is often replicated in glossy fashion publications.
